John Hodgman's book "The Areas of My Expertise" is currently free on the iTunes Music Store. You'll recognize him from the Daily Show or the PC in the recent Apple commercials.
I don't know why it is free, but he is a pretty funny guy, and free is a great price for something that will entertain me while i drive somewhere sometime this holiday season.
Enjoy. |

Behind my office parking lot is the bike path, and a house that is 6 houses on the other side of it just exploded and entirely burned down! We felt the explosion and the building shook.

In a matter of minutes, or even seconds, everything that that family had was gone. I'm glad to hear that they are reporting that there were no injuries, but it is just crazy how quickly things can change, and how damn lucky i've been. Here i am, excited today, because i'm filling my new 60G iPod with all my music, and they just lost everything. And i'm sure, in the end, they have insurance (Lexington is a very rich town), and life will go on, just without their things. So many other people around the world have had tragic things like this happen to them and they can't get out of the horrible situation easily.
It was just so weird to feel an explosion like that, and how lucky we are that something like this is so completely shocking and disturbingly exciting, rather than common place and life threatening. |

Last summer Em and i biked from Waltham to Cape Cod over the period of 4 days, camping on the Cape, and taking the ferry back from Provincetown to Boston and biking back to Waltham. It was a lot of fun, but tiring.
I decided to do it again myself this summer, and did it from Aug 18-21. I loaded up my bike with a tent, bathing suit, and clothes and biked. This time i cheated a bit and drove to Jamaica Plain and started from there, to save 10 miles the first day.
I wrote in my journal a lot, and i finally finished typing them up. I also took some pictures on the trip.
Enjoy if you want. |

Dist: 29.81 miles today [177.6 miles for the trip] [703.36 miles total so far this year] Time: 2:51:11 hours today [16:07 hours for the trip] Avg: 10.5 mi/hr today [11.02 mi/hr for the trip] Max: 33.0
Done! And at home. And have been for a few hours. Been home long enough to do laundry, clean up and put away things, grease up the bike again, take a shower, eat dinner, and label the photos. Still not done with everything i could think of to do tonight, but i'm up way past my bedtime of the past few nights (which is pretty funny really).
After breaky, i biked up to Truro and went to Head of the Meadows beach. Thankfully the map lied (as did the signs in front of the beach) and i didn't have to pay to ride a bike in. The waves were pretty big at high tide, and the beach was pretty dramatic. However, it was very grey and overcast. That, and my grumpiness from earlier in the day, had led me to decide that i wasn't going to spend a full day at the beach, but instead would would aim for the 4:30 ferry instead of the 8:30 ferry. Since the weather wasn't behaving, and i'm going to have a very busy week rehearsing every night, i figured i'd come home earlier so i'd get in before midnight so i could take care of things around the house. Which i've certainly done!
The beach was fun, and i enjoyed watching the kids get knocked around by the strong waves (they were having fun so it wasn't cruel of me to enjoy it). Then i got on my way to make sure i'd have enough time to catch the earlier ferry. The ride over to Provincetown had wind going at angles against me, but i just rode slow (especially with my knee acting up a bit) and got there by 3:30. Turns out the ferry wasn't at 4:30 like i thought, but 4. Good thing i had gotten the extra time. I went and got myself a vanilla malt frappe (so much for not getting ice cream every day) and waited online.
As i was loading my bike up, a guy loading his up asked where i was touring from. So i proudly told him that i had biked from Boston starting Thursday. He responded, "oh, taking your time." See, he had just done it since 6 AM that morning in 10 hours. Yikes! So Roger and i talked the whole way back on the ferry, about biking and trips he's done (earlier this year in the Blue Ridge Mountains, from Pittsburgh to Oregon a few years ago, and other trips) about how to adjust my seat properly, and other things.
Since he was headed to Jamaica Plain as well, i didn't need my map, i just followed him as he weaved around traffic and against one way streets – not the way i like to bike in cities, but we were safe enough. After we parted ways i did try and adjust my seat and did get it comfier – better late than never i suppose. When i got back to the car i realized i was feeling pretty energetic, especially considering, and on the way home considered calling up friends so i could bike over to their place for dinner instead of doing all my chores. Both my chores and my knee are glad that i stayed home and got other things done, but now that it is time for bed, there is a part of me that feels i let the exciting energy of the last few days of travel flitter away into chores rather than living out the rest of the day ecstatically. At least i'm writing this now.
It was a really good trip, and i'm really glad to have done it. I'll probably have more thoughts to say about it later. |

Woke up a quarter after 8. Very slowly and groggily took a shower and packed up. Put some some sun screen on in the morning so it doesn't pill up once i start sweating. Eventually i asked a group of gays and lesbians if one of them would be willing to put some on my back since yesterday's experiment with doing it myself was an extreme failure.
I'm at the Wicked Oyster for breaky, and finally some fresh OJ (i'll enjoy making that a lot when i finally get to the Himalyan). I perked up and started smiling more here because they were playing the Talking Heads.
It was sunny (last night was so foggy on the bike ride back!) but it is turning grey now. I'll just have to be sunny on the inside.

I'm at The Juice for dinner, although i think i got forgotten outside, and i didn't get through that sentence before the waiter came by – he must have been waiting for me to write.
The beach was relaxing and calm. The sun came out for a bit in the middle but then a fog came back. My experiment with putting sunscreen on my own back seems to have failed. I watched surfers some later in the day, as well as some kids with skim boards. I studied some lines, read (and underlined) some in The Invitation and just tried to be. I left when i started to get too cold and it seemed silly to stay. When i got to the top of the dune, it was warmer and it had an interesting view of the surfers, so i watched the scene from above. Then i meditated for a bit, realized that i was too sleepy and napped for a bit.
I enjoyed the hilly ride to Wellfleet because the hills were mostly in my direction. I passed up a pond on the way which maybe i should have taken up its offer.
I got some ice cream and strolled through Wellfleet. then off to the sunset on the opposite shore – two hours early. But it was good because the tide was out and it looked real neat. I walked on the elongated beach and then the fog from the other side caught up to me. So i enjoyed the environs and a father raking for crabs and clams in the shallow water and fog. At one point i heard his voice come out of the thick fog saying to his daughters: "Don't you think this is one of the coolest places in the world?" And a daughter responded with awe and pride and joy "Yes, i do." It was a really neat exchange. Then, since the fog was way too thick, and there was not going to be any sunset, i left before it had completely set (i think).
Maybe i'll find a local watering hole after dinner, but only if i think i'll find a conversation.
Reading The Invitation i'm reminded that i want to be, and live intimately and fully connected with life. That i want to live passionately and joyfully. Even on this trip i haven't been doing that "enough" – but it has been good and great for me. But like today, i didn't know what "to do" with my day rather than just enjoying it, and being in it more.
I've been listening to other people's conversations, not really paying attention, but just sort of enjoying the company. It is a shame that i haven't gotten into as many conversations as the first day.
Mmm, dinner smells good. But i make a much better smoothie (which is sad since this place is called "The Juice").

Woke up at 8 on my own. Slept well, but did adjust a lot on the hard ground. Took a shower and meditate for 10-20 minutes before neighbors put on music. Went for breaky and made my way to the beach. Got here around 11. Very cloudy and hazy, but the sun is starting to poke through. Maybe the sun will come out to play. If so, it'll probably be real hot. Came to a beach where surfers come, but it is high tide so they're not here yet. Some fools are running up and down the huge sand dune, which my knee (and the rest of me) thinks is silly.

Riding after dinner was a lot easier and even fun. A bat flew overhead in my path for awhile and it was neat – i've never seen one for so long before, since they always flutter away. My knee was fine except the occasional flutter [before dinner my left knee had started acting up and was painful at times – something i've never had happen before].
I left dinner around 7:40 and it was great. So was the pomegranate soda with no added sugar. Yum!
I talked to Em on the phone when i got here and that was nice to share the accomplishment with her.
